• Hall 60th anniversary

      Morris and Hilda Hall of Shallotte celebrate their 60th anniversary Feb. 4, 2016, at Lover’s Leap in Virginia. The Halls, both originally from Virginia, have two daughters and four granddaughters, and can be seen every Monday and Wednesday morning at Hardees in Supply “dancing up and down the aisles to country music.”

  • Holden serves aboard USS Maryland

        A 2013 West Brunswick High School graduate and Supply native is serving in the Navy as part of a crew working aboard one of the world’s most advanced ballistic missile submarines, USS Maryland (SSBN 738).

    Fireman Kevin Holden is a fire control technician serving aboard the Kings Bay-based boat, one of 14 Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines. A Navy fire control technician is responsible for controlling outgoing weapons, tracking surface and air contacts, launching defensive weapons and verifying the safely of the boat.

  • Smith honored for 55 years of service

     The North Carolina Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts had its 72nd annual meeting Jan. 3-5 at the Sheraton Imperial at Research Triangle Park in Raleigh. The association’s theme for this past year was “Conservation — Contagious Enthusiasm.”

  • Menius, Burgess announce engagement


    Announcement is made of the forthcoming marriage of Rachael Menius and Dan Burgess of Boston.

    The bride-elect is the daughter of David and Donna Menius of Ocean Isle Beach. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Pennsylvania, she is a pediatric palliative care nurse practitioner at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children’s Hospital.

  • Werners celebrate 50th anniversary

     William and Beverly Werner celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, Nov. 21, with family and friends at the beach on Ocean Isle Beach. They renewed their vows and then the bride, escorted by her nephew William Payne from California, trashed her original wedding dress in the ocean. The Werners returned to Carolina Shores in 2012 from New Jersey, where William worked as a paramedic at Hackensack Hospital and Beverly worked for United Parcel Service.

  • Rankins celebrate 50th wedding anniversary

     Everald and Orine Rankin of Shallotte celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Dec. 12. The couple first met in Bridgeport, Conn., at a mutual friend’s get-together “and it was love at first sight.” They were married two weeks later, Dec. 12, 1965. Today they have four children (twins Georgina and George, Shirley and Rosa), eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

  • Stahl birth

     Aaron and Ashton Stahl of Shallotte are the proud parents of a son, Luke Aaron Stahl, born at 6:18 p.m. Sept. 15 at New Hanover Regional Women’s Center in Wilmington, weighing 8 pounds and measuring 20 1/2 inches in length.

    Maternal grandparents are Matt and Candice Chappell of Ash.

    Paternal grandparents are Michael and Patricia Stahl of Sarasota, Fla.

    Great-grandparents are Richard and Christine Hewett of Shallotte, William and Linda Chappell of Ash and Shirley Bogus of Sarasota, Fla.

  • Rountree promoted to major

     Wilmington native Capt. Clinton A. Rountree was promoted to the rank of major during a promotion ceremony Nov. 13 at Liberty Chapel in Fort Lee, Va. He is the son of D.C. Rountree of Holden Beach and the late Gloria Rountree.

  • Pearl Harbor survivors, witnesses sought for commemoration ceremony


    The World War II Wilmington Home Front Heritage Coalition is seeking Pearl Harbor survivors and witnesses for southeastern North Carolina’s annual Pearl Harbor commemoration ceremony scheduled for Dec. 7 at Battleship Park.
