  • Marilyn Tully and Len Pietrafesa were married June 22, 1968, in Bloomfield, N.J.

    They met in Chicago and after marrying, moved to Corvallis, Ore., and then to Seattle. They settled in Raleigh, where they raised three daughters.

    Since they retired — Len from N.C. State and Marilyn from Wake County Public Schools — they moved to Ocean Isle Beach and Charlotte, where they spend their time golfing, traveling the world and enjoying their four grandchildren.

  • In case you didn’t get the memo, today (June 21) is the first day of summer. It seems to me, though, it actually started a few weeks earlier.

    We all enjoy grilling meats on our outdoor grills this time of year, especially during these hot, summer months. Heating up the kitchen oven doesn’t seem like a good option for me.

  • Lauren Hillary Liles and Tyler Morris Lancaster, both of Raleigh, were united in marriage Saturday, May 19, at Shady Wagon Farm in New Hill.

    The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Van Liles Jr. of Raleigh. She is the granddaughter of Mr. Ned W. LaFevers and the late Doris LaFevers and the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Van Liles Sr., all of Morganton.

  • According to the Produce for Better Health Foundation (PBH), spinach was first cultivated more than 2,000 years ago in Iran. By 1806, it had become a popular vegetable in America and in the 1920s the U.S. pushed spinach commercially, with the Popeye cartoon becoming a great advocate for spinach consumption.

     

    Spinach seems to beone of those foods you either like or don’t. Spinach can be eaten raw in salads and as a cooked green, much like turnip or collard greens.

     

  • Air Force National Guard Airman 1st Class Armand Behroozfard, son of Rachel Behroozfard of Leland, graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.

    Behroozfard completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

  • Our society seems to be seriously polarized these days. People on both sides have strongly-held opinions that aren’t easily swayed by facts or logic. But, even those with a casual knowledge of history know it has always been that way. We don’t have duels with pistols anymore; we just trash those we disagree with on social media. 

    You didn’t come here to get philosophical comments about the ills of our society, but there are parallels in the gardening world. A recent experience helping a friend with a centipede lawn bears this out.

  • A Helping Hands fundraiser/cruise-in will be from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at Rourk Garden on Main Street in Shallotte, across from Jerome’s Steakhouse.

    Hot dogs, fried bologna sandwiches, chips and drinks will be sold to raise money to offset medical and other expenses for Jim Hans, owner of Jim’s Automotive on Holden Beach Road.

    Hans’ business has been closed for more than a month while he battles cancer and pneumonia.

  • Tide Dye Tuesday is held weekly on Tuesdays through Aug. 14 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Holden Beach Pavilion, except for July 10 when it will take place at Bridgeview Park.

    Shirts are $5 each for youth XS-adult XL and $7 each for adult 2XL. All supplies are included.

  • The berries are back again! Available practically year-round at the supermarket, blackberries, blueberries and strawberries just taste better when bought from a local farmers market. Being from the North, we were able to also grow raspberries, which unfortunately is hard to do here in Brunswick County.

    Berries are rich in antioxidants, fiber, folate and potassium. They are also virtually fat-free and low in calories, except when smothered in whipped cream. But don’t let that stop you from enjoying a variety of them in a dessert.
