  • As many of you may know, or not know, a ham comes from the rear leg of a hog, and is usually preserved by a combination of salting, smoking or drying. Which leg? It has been said that pigs scratch themselves using there right leg; therefore, the left leg of the pig should be tenderer than the right leg. Right? This is only a guess on my part.

    Newspapers are filled with holiday ads. Wrapping paper and decorations appear on department store shelves. The holiday will soon be here. If your gift-giving list includes a gardener, take some advice from a few of Brunswick County’s most experienced gardeners.

  • Soil and water board to meet Nov. 19
    The Brunswick Soil & Water Conservation District Board will meet at
    7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at the Brunswick Soil & Water Conservation District Office, Building F, in the Government Center in Bolivia.

  • Before heading to the grocery store, plan your meals for the week. Include meals like stews, casseroles or stir-fries, which “stretch” expensive items into more portions. Check to see what foods you already have and make a list for what you need to buy.
    Locate the “unit price” on the shelf directly below the product. Use it to compare different brands and different sizes of the same brand to determine which is more economical.

  • In honor of Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day on Nov. 15, let’s play Food: Keep or Toss? Should you “keep” or “toss” the following food:
    1. Tacos left on the kitchen counter overnight?
    2. Meat thawed all day on the kitchen counter?
    3. Cut or peeled fruits and vegetables left at room temperature more than two hours?
    4. Leftover pizza placed in the refrigerator within two hours after it was cooked?
    5. Leftovers kept in the refrigerator for more than a week?

  • Ballet Opera Alliance is presenting its second annual performance of “The Nutcracker” Ballet at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, in Odell Williamson Auditorium at Brunswick Community College.

    Ballet Opera Alliance is the first and only Brunswick County group to offer the traditional and complete “Nutcracker,” a full evening of entertainment for the entire family.

    New this year is a custom-designed Christmas tree that will grow onstage, plus the Kingdom of Sweets drops, both painted by regional artist Rusty Hughes.

  • Skeletons, ghosts, witches and goblins descended on the Museum of Coastal Carolina on Oct. 25 for the first-ever Spooky Night at the Museum.
    The pirate ship in the museum’s lobby and the gaily-decorated museum galleries resulted in smiling faces and even a few anxious faces for those who (with parental permission) bravely ventured into the “scary room.”

  • Woodturners to meet in Leland Nov. 10
    The Wilmington Area Woodturners Association (WAWA) will meet from
    10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Leland VFW Post 9408, 1211 Village Road in Leland.

  • On Oct. 23, the Dosher Memorial Hospital volunteers presented a donation of $46,162.66 to Dosher Hospital President and CEO Edgar Haywood III at the hospital.
    The donation was made possible through the fundraising efforts of Dosher volunteers at the hospital’s gift shop and the Dosher Hospital volunteer flea market at 129 E. Moore St. in Southport.
    The check represented hospital donations made by Dosher volunteers during the last five months, from May through September.
