    Deacon Robert Beatty, 97, of Council, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at Cape Fear Valley Bladen Healthcare in Elizabethtown.
    Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Thursday, March 1, at Kitchen Branch Missionary Baptist Church in Council with the Rev. Luby Harvey eulogizing. The pastor is the Rev. Anthony Gause. Burial will follow in Carvers Creek Cemetery.

    Betty “Kay” Tripp, 67, of Shallotte, died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012.

  • Cathy Strobel

    Catherine Jewel “Cathy” Strobel, 60, of Carolina Shores, formerly of Waldwick, N.J., died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at her residence.
    Born in Elkins, W.Va., on Dec. 22, 1951, she was a daughter of the late Alfred “Al” E. and Alice Lorraine Hensil Smith.
    Surviving are her husband, Richard “Rich” Strobel; a son, Richard Allen Strobel Jr. of Frederick, Md.; a daughter, Karen Strobel of Carolina Shores; and two sisters, Jeannie Soukup of Eldersburg, Md., and Toni Keating of Bethesda, Md.
    No local services are planned.

  • John Rendleman Jr.

    John Thomas Rendleman Jr., died Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at his residence in Calabash.
    He was born in Charlotte on Dec. 27, 1954, and was a son of John Thomas and Ruth Hall Rendleman.
    Surviving are his wife, Janice Bennett Rendleman; daughters, Ashley Hales of Davidson, and Krysta Gannett of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a son, Heath Bartley of Charlotte; three sisters, Ruth Rendleman of Montague, N.J., Mary Catherine Edwards of Salisbury, and Phoebe Anne Rendleman of Durham; and eight grandchildren.

  • Duke McMillan

    Melvin D. “Duke” McMillan, 31, of Scotts Hill, died on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at UNC Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill.
    He was a son of the late Melvin E. McMillan and Brenda Foy McMillan.
    A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, from St. Stephens AME Church in Scotts Hill. The pastor is the Rev. Clark and the eulogist will be the Rev. Robert McKoy Jr. Burial will follow in Pollock Cemetery.

    Ann Marie “Mia” Martin-Glucker, 63, of Supply, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at her home.
    She was born on April 17, 1948, in New Jersey, and was a daughter of the late William and Katherine Sweeney Martin

  • Ruth Hewett

    Mrs. Ruth Carolyn Hewett, 80, of Supply, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
    Mrs. Hewett was born May 17, 1931, in Wilmington, a daughter of the late Dock and Dessie Carter Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, JT Hewett.
    She loved puzzles, seek-and-find books, going out to eat, shopping and being with her family.

  • William Hatcher

    William Gray Hatcher, 66, of Supply, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012.
    Bill was the son of the late Porter and Myrtle Hatcher.
    He is survived by his loving wife, Judy Gray Hatcher; one son, Anthony “Todd” Hatcher; one daughter, Shannon Hatcher; a brother, Terry Wembish; two grandchildren, Nathan Hatcher and Trever Hatcher.
    Mr. Hatcher was a veteran of Vietnam, and a recipient of the Purple Heart award. A loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, Bill will be greatly missed by those whose lives he has touched.

  • Joyce Grimsley

    Joyce Grimsley, 78, of Supply, passed away on Friday, Feb. 17, 2012. She was born on Jan. 2, 1934, to the late Ennis and Carrie Grimsley.
    Ms. Grimsley was a clinical social worker, certified to provide psychotherapy to adults, children and families in North Carolina. She worked in the mental health movement since she was a college student and assisted in implementing mental health services in New Hanover County as well as Brunswick County.

  • Robin Furr

    Robin Morton Furr, 53, of Leland, died at home peacefully with her family by her side on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012.
    She was born on June 21, 1958, in Kanawha County, W.Va., a daughter of James and Rosalee Martin Nelson.
    Surviving are her mother, Rosalee Nelson of Shallotte; a sister, Vicki Gross of Florida; two daughters, Angel Roe of Arkansas City, Kan., and Tonya Townsend and husband Tommy of Ash; and five grandchildren.
