• Sunset Slush expands into Wrightsville Beach, Charlotte

    Sunset Slush-Classic Italian Ice of Ocean Isle Beach continues to expand this season with the opening of its ninth location at Wrightsville Beach.
    The most recent addition to the retail operation is owned and operated by Drew Sellers, a Brunswick County native and a 2008 graduate of UNC Wilmington. After graduation, he moved back to Ocean Isle Beach due to the economy and limited job opportunities. His younger brother, Devin, worked for Sunset Slush of Ocean Isle Beach and introduced his family to the Italian Ice.

  • Dosher Memorial Hospital gets MRI accreditation

    Dosher Memorial Hospital has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) through the American College of Radiology (ACR). The ACR accreditation of Dosher’s MRI service completes the hospital’s yearlong goal to gain accreditation in all of its diagnostic imaging modalities.

  • Money lender arrested

    The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office along with the North Carolina Department of Insurance and Department of Motor Vehicles began an investigation into a Wilmington company nearly two years ago that led to an arrest last week.

    The Department of Insurance and DMV received numerous community complaints regarding fraud and possible predatory lending processes stemming from a company named Time Finance Services. An investigation reported in December 2009 in Brunswick County led to a cooperative effort from Sheriff’s Office Detectives, DOI and DMV Inspectors.

    Arbor Landing has Relay for Life Gala

    On May 5, Arbor Landing at Ocean Isle hosted its inaugural Relay for Life Gala from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tickets were pre-sold for $15 with all proceeds from the evening benefiting the Arbor Landing at Ocean Isle Relay for Life team.

    Silver Coast Winery’s 2008 Cabernet Franc, produced from grapes grown in North Carolina and 2007 Touriga, an earthy, Bordeaux-style red wine, each took a bronze medal in the 11th annual Finger Lakes International Wine Competition March 26-27 at the Rochester Plaza Hotel in Rochester, N.Y.

    The Environmental Health Food and Lodging Section of the Brunswick County Health Department presented the 12th annual Golden A awards to local food establishments at a ceremony at the Government Complex in Bolivia.

  • Family comedian returns home to entertain

    A funny man who grew up as the ninth of 14 children on a farm along U.S. 17 in Bolivia is returning home to entertain audiences.

    Brunswick County’s own Alcindor Hankins, aka LaSalle LaSalle, will perform along with musical talent Dick Knight Express as a fundraiser for Mt. Carmel AME Church of Southport. Performances will be at the Odell Williamson Auditorium.

    Established jeans maker FDJ French Dressing, a Montreal, Canada, company, launched an online contest in search of “real women models” that will be featured in its fall 2011 campaign. 

    Nominees from across North America entered the contest on the company’s website by submitting a 200-word essay describing how they have helped shape people’s lives.
