• School art show opens March 25

    The Franklin Square Gallery High School Art Show opens on Monday, March 25. Students from three local high schools will display an array of paintings, drawings, prints and photography, as well as three-dimensional constructions. Rusty Hughes, art instructor at Brunswick Community College, will judge their work.

  • Former NFL player encourage students to follow their dreams

    SHALLOTTE—Freeze and think about the consequences.

    That was the message shared at two area middle schools Tuesday.

    Former NFL player Levar Fisher shared his message with students at Shallotte and Cedar Grove middle schools.

    Fisher played for the New Orleans Saints and the Arizona Cardinals after playing college football at N.C. State University.

    From a young age his dream was to play in the NFL, but those around him weren’t always supportive.

    BCC sponsors sustainability symposium March 22
    To be up-to-date on current sustainability trends, Brunswick Community College (BCC), through the Green Information and Training Center, has established an annual Sustainability Symposium and Expo. Now in its third year, the event is hosted by BCC’s Economic and Workforce Development in collaboration with the North Carolina Military Business Center at the BCC Leland Center for Economic and Workforce Development. This year’s theme is “Sustainability and the Future of Energy and Water.”

  • Peer court hears real middle-school cases

    Most middle-school students will not be required to use the phrase, “The defense rests, your honor.” Not so for Eliana Nunez-Dominguez, a seventh-grade student at Leland Middle School, who uses it frequently as a student attorney in the Peer Court program.
    Peer Court is a partnership between the district attorney’s office and Communities in Schools of Brunswick County.

  • Waccamaw students win spelling bee

    Waccamaw School has announced its spelling bee winners.
    First grade: Gage Caldwell, Trinity Atkinson, Alicia High, Tiffany Guin, Cesar Vargas, Nadia Cortez, Rand Warren and Greyson Miller.
    Second grade: Jayna Smith, Eric Schilz, Jazamine Garcia, Brandon Graham, Juan Ramos, Kayla Cauler, Bethanie Benton, Layla Norris and Faith Simmons.
    Third grade: Lacey Lammonds, Garrett Emmons, Daelyn Fairley, Christian Cortes, Megan Wesley, Daniel Padilla, Chandler Sellers, Trevor Tucholski and River Lewis.

  • Lunch buddy is also a math tutor

    At Leland Middle School, Dan Levine is a lunch buddy (mentor) to two students and is also a math tutor in the Action for Success Program. He isn’t just a volunteer…his energy and ideas go above and beyond.

    Pre-K registration set for March 5
    N.C. Pre-K registration for children in Brunswick County will be 9 a.m.-4 p.m. March 5, at the Leland 5th District Community Building in Leland (the WIC Building) and from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. March 12, at Smart Start of Brunswick County, 5140 Sellers St. in Shallotte.
    Children must be 4 years old by Aug. 31 to be eligible for NCPK.

  • Judge takes oath at Waccamaw

    Students at Waccamaw School attended the swearing in of District Court Judge Marion Warren on Jan. 15 at the school.
    Judge Warren and his family members have all attended Waccamaw since the school first opened. He was quick to express his admiration and appreciation for the teachers and school where he got his start.
    “I want my neighbors and community to know that students from Waccamaw and Brunswick County can accomplish anything,” he said.

    Ikalowych honored at Citadel
    Stephen James Ikalowych of Oak Island was recently honored for outstanding academic achievement at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, during the fall semester of the 2012-2013 academic year.
    Ikalowych earned one of the college’s top academic honors, a Gold Star, presented to students who achieve a 3.7 grade point average or higher during a semester’s course work.
    Gold Stars are worn on the collar of the cadet full dress and dress uniforms and the summer leave uniform.
