    Larceny of a truck and trailer worth $6,000 from Beach House Harley-Davidson on Harley-Davidson Drive.

    Vandalism, destruction of property totaling $4,000 and theft of $500 from coin-operated drink machines in the parking lot of GoGas on Main Street.

    Larceny of $30.01 in gas from Murphy USA gas station on New Pointe Boulevard.

  • Officials warn of repair scams after disaster

    Citizens should be aware that following large storms and weather events, scammers sometimes target residents in the affected areas, according to a Brunswick County news release.

    Brunswick County is not endorsing contractors or vendors, and Brunswick County Public Utilities has not authorized any vendors to make repairs to utility lines on their behalf.

    If citizens encounter someone making such a claim or suspect a scammer in Brunswick County, they can report it by calling 911, 253-2777 or 253-5383.

  • Death reported at Hurricane Florence shelter in Shallotte

    Someone died at West Brunswick High School in Shallotte, which is in use as an emergency shelter during Hurricane Florence, on Thursday morning.

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Emily Flax said all questions about the death should be directed to county spokeswoman Amanda Hutcheson.

  • Deputies arrest four in break-ins during hurricane

    Brunswick County sheriff’s deputies arrested four men, including two charged in a fatal 2016 Shallotte crash, accused of breaking into cars and businesses during Hurricane Florence. 

    The sheriff's office received a call Thursday last night about break-ins in and around Carolina Shores and Calabash, spokeswoman Emily Flax said. Deputies arrested Devin Keither Harris, 21, and Justice William Harris, 18, and charged them each with breaking or entering a motor vehicle. They were each booked in the Brunswick County Detention Facility on $5,000 bail.

  • Bolivia man gets 18 years for cocaine distribution

     

    Senior U.S. District Judge Malcolm J. Howard sentenced a Bolivia man Sept. 12 to 18 years in prison for possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

    Howard also ordered 43-year-old Davin Lamont Smith to six years of supervised release, according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office news release.

    Smith was charged in a six-count superseding indictment March 22, 2017, and pleaded guilty to four counts April 11.

  • BBB study shows how fake check scams bait unwary consumers

    An in-depth study by the Better Business Bureau finds that while consumers may write fewer checks in this era of electronic financial transactions, fake check scams are on the rise. Fake checks are used in a variety of frauds, from employment scams to prize and sweepstakes fraud. In all cases, victims deposit the check and send money back to scammers. BBB warns consumers to be on guard against these serious and pervasive frauds and their perpetrators.

    Burglary, breaking and entering by entering the garage of a Village Road residence and stealing $450 in tools.

    Larceny of a case of water from the Circle K convenience store on Main Street.

    Candice Elaine White, 38, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of possession of stolen goods.

    Identity theft using the victim’s personal information to open accounts and incur $2,750 in debt.

    Simple assault by striking the victim in the face with an open palm in the parking lot of Piggly Wiggly shopping Center at 112 Village Road.
