  • Investigators seek Leland man on felony sex crime charges

    The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a Leland man facing felony sex crimes.

    Deputies expect to charge 40-year-old Jesus Rocha Mendez of Andrew Jackson Highway with incest and sex act by substitute parent, according to a sheriff’s office Facebook post.

    Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Detective Shannon Mylod at 508-7626 or 911.

  • Leland man pleads guilty in puppy’s beating death

    A Leland man accused of beating a puppy on Christmas Day pleaded guilty Tuesday to a charge of felony cruelty to animals.

    New Hanover County sheriff’s deputies arrested 21-year-old Christopher Anthony Simpson on Jan. 22 and charged him with felony cruelty to animals and misdemeanor cruelty to animals. Simpson was released the same day on $2,500 bail.

    Simpson was re-arrested Jan. 23 and his bail increased to $100,000.

  • New fire truck arrives in Ocean Isle Beach

    The newest addition to the Ocean Isle Beach Fire department has arrived: a Ferrara Fire Apparatus Inferno 107-foot, 4-inch Section Aerial Ladder Truck, which will assist the fire department in its continuous effort to secure the safety of residents and visitors to Ocean Isle Beach.

    Vehicle stolen from Food Lion at 1775 Clippers Way.

    Mark D. Benton, 61, of 40th Street, Sunset Beach, arrested on a DWI charge.

    April 6

    Firearm stolen on Clubhouse Road.

    Fraud on Wyndfall Drive.

    Sunset Beach police investigated the following incidents and made these arrests. All information is taken directly from incident and arrest reports.

    March 26

    Matthew William Rimel, 38, of Gracieuse Lane, Ocean Isle Beach, was arrested on charges of breaking and entering, felony larceny and damage to real property.

    March 28

    Child’s bicycle stolen from Salt Marsh Drive.

    March 29

    Lawn equipment, outdoor table, chairs and crab pot stolen from North Shore Drive.

  • Calabash Fire Department March 2018

    During the month of March, the Calabash Fire Department responded to 167 calls: three structure fires, three woods/brush fires, 12 fire alarms, seven motor vehicle accidents, a gas leak, 24 public assistance, two mutual aid, an other and 115 EMS first-response calls.

  • Speed a Little, Lose a Lot campaign under way

    The North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program, in partnership with state and local law enforcement, is conducting its annual Speed a Little, Lose a Lot campaign, which runs through Sunday, April 1. The campaign reminds drivers there is no reason to speed because the consequences could be more than just getting a ticket.

  • Cause of Sunset Harbor home fire under investigation

    The cause of a fire that destroyed a Sunset Harbor residence on Thursday, March 22, remains under investigation.

    No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

    A call came about the fire on Cox’s Landing Road in about 10:15 p.m., Brunswick County Fire Marshal Scott Garner said.

    The home was partially involved when crews arrived and is considered a total loss.

    Personnel from Sunset Harbor & Zion Hill Fire Department, St. James Fire Department and Supply Volunteer Fire Department responded, Garner said.

  • Agents arrest Longwood man on drug charges

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Vice Narcotics Unit agents arrested a Longwood man on a variety of drug charges Thursday, March 22.
