  • Commissioners honor WBHS graduate for Eagle Scout status

    BOLIVIA—Brunswick County commissioners on Monday approved a resolution honoring a local Eagle Scout.

    Brett Flaccavento was honored at Monday night’s meeting for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout while giving back to an organization close to his heart.

    A West Brunswick High School graduate, Flaccavento is a student at Brunswick Community College and works at Walmart. For his Eagle Scout project, he collected more than 250 pounds of soda pop tabs.

  • Brunswick County unemployment up in December

    Unemployment in Brunswick County was up in December.

    While recently released national jobless numbers show a sub-9 percent national average, Brunswick County’s unemployment rate in December was 11.9 percent, up significantly from 10.5 percent just the month before.

    It was also up from the December 2010 unemployment rate of 11.3 percent.

  • Brunswick County Sheriff's Office crime report

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies investigated the following incidents, which are taken directly from sheriff’s office incident reports:

    •Breaking and entering, larceny and property damage on North Howe Street in Southport; suspect broke window of victim’s vehicle and stole money, a wallet, a cell phone, credit cards, checkbooks, medication and victim’s purse.

    •Breaking and entering and larceny on Ross Court in Southport; suspect stole victim’s medication.

  • One killed in wreck on U.S. 17 near Brunswick Electric

    SUPPLY—A man was killed Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle wreck on U.S. 17 in Supply.

    Few details were immediately available, North Carolina State Highway Patrol Sgt. C.K. Parks said Tuesday. More information about the people involved was expected to be released Tuesday afternoon.

  • Officers from multiple agencies searching for breaking and entering suspect

    Officers from multiple local law enforcement agencies are searching for a suspect wanted with a string of residential break-ins.

    Detectives from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office as well as Oak Island, Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle Beach and Holden Beach police departments have been investigating the string of break-ins for several months.

    Warrants have been issued for Hamilton John Ortiz Bones, 33, for the break-ins.

    A reward is being offered for information leading to the apprehension and prosecution of the suspect.

  • Dolphins defeat Spartanburg Prep

     Quinton Morrow made two steals in the final minute to help Brunswick Community College beat Spartanburg Prep 68-57 Sunday on Walter Shaw Court at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center gym.

    For BCC (12-10), Steve Johnson scored 13 points, Morrow 11 and Alex Tucker nine.

    BCC led 41-28 at the half and maintained the 13-point lead as Tucker scored seven of the Dolphins’ first 10 points. Tucker later suffered an apparent leg injury and did not return.

  • County high school wrestling championships

     LELAND—The three county high schools ended their regular season of wrestling with the conference championships Saturday at North Brunswick. Two West freshmen were among the six Trojans who won county titles.

    At 106, West senior Ronnie Dellinger beat South senior Steven Van Voight 9-0. Dellinger is 34-2.

    At 113, West freshman Jyquan Green beat South sophomore Jarrett Walls 5-3. Green is 6-7.

    At 120, South sophomore Dustin Jones won by injury default over North’s Gabe Self. Jones is 22-21.
