  • Shallotte Commons concerts and car shows

    SHALLOTTE—Looking for something entertaining? How about starting the summer season off early with a new concert and car show series.

    Shallotte Commons is the place to be for the 2012 Summer Concert Series. The fun kicks off Saturday, April 21. There will be a car show featuring the Sun Coast Cruisers and a concert with the live music of Chuck Johnson, “The Charlyhorse.”

  • Shallotte talks candidly with Mark Saunders

    SHALLOTTE—A special committee formed at the April aldermen meeting met with Mark Saunders of The Coastal Companies last Wednesday to see if they could work together.

    The town is in a position to call a bond on The Coastal Companies for failure to complete infrastructure work in the Rivers Edge community. After numerous attempts to communicate with The Coastal Companies, aldermen were prepared to discuss calling the bond when Saunders contacted the town requesting to talk.

  • Ocean Isle Beach Crime Report


    The Ocean Isle Beach Police Department investigated the following incidents and made the following arrests last week. All information is taken directly from police incident and arrest reports.

    •Emmett Taylor Jr. of Fort Mill, S.C., was charged with misdemeanor breaking and entering and damage to real property. Taylor entered the Marathon gas station at 118 Causeway Drive around 2:45 a.m. April 4. The glass of the front entry door was broken.

    •Lorenzo Piggott of McMilly Road, Shallotte, was arrested for an outstanding warrant.

  • Shallotte Crime

    The Shallotte police department office is closed to the public while the building undergoes renovations. Anyone wishing to speak to an officer or obtain a copy of a police report must go to the Southend Task Force building at 130 Cheers Street. The number to reach the police department is 754-6008.

    •Identity fraud; suspect made charges on a debit card belonging to the victim.

  • North rallies from 11-3 deficit to beat West 19-16 in baseball

    North Brunswick overcame an 11-3 deficit to defeat West Brunswick 19-16 in a marathon slugfest in Shallotte April 17.

    The seven-inning, 35-run high school baseball game lasted 3½ hours.

    If hitting is indeed contagious, this was a full-blown epidemic. North had 14 hits in 34 at-bats while West had 12 hits in 31 at-bats.

    The loss dropped the Trojans out of sole possession of first place in the Waccamaw Conference and into a tie with North Brunswick and Whiteville.

  • Lady Trojans beat West Bladen 7-0 in shortened game

     In a conference game April 18 in which West Brunswick girls’ soccer team played sometimes with as few as nine players on the field, the Lady Trojans beat West Bladen 7-0 at West Bladen.

    Carla Zio, off an assist from Skylar Jenkins, scored the Trojans’ final goal 23 seconds after the start of the second half in a heavy rain. The game ended shortly thereafter.

    West scored its first goal quicker than it did its last goal: Karson Lewis scored in 15 seconds. Within 2 minutes, Some Milliken scored off an assist from Lewis.

  • Guild displays ‘A Galaxy of Quilts’

    The Brunswick Quilters guild will present “A Galaxy of Quilts” quilt show from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, May 19, and from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at The Brunswick Center, 1513 North Howe St. in Southport.

  • Club briefs

    Buy wine tasting tickets by April 25
    The Ocean Isle Beach Chapter of the American Wine Society will host its next wine tasting event for area wine lovers and their guests at 5 p.m. April 29 at the Silver Coast Winery, 6680 Barbeque Road in Ocean Isle Beach.
    The cost of the tasting will be $10. All guests are urged to bring their favorite wine glass for this event. Prior to the tasting, the chapter will have a brief meet-and-greet social with wine and cheese being served.

  • Garden tour offers views of coastal plantings

    The Coastal Garden Club of Shallotte will host its annual tour and tea on Saturday, April 28. Gardens in the Seascape and Lockwood Folly plantations will be open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The tea will take place from noon-3 p.m. at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church.

    Clapper wins national Hardee’s award
    Patty Clapper of the Hardee’s at 5 Ocean Highway West in Supply has won the Carleton Noell Achievers award, the top award given out by the largest Hardee’s franchisee in the country, Boddie-Noell Enterprises.
    The Carleton Noell Achievers award is given annually to the company’s top 10 restaurant general managers and top district managers. This is the second time Clapper has won this award and the sixth time the restaurant has won.
