  • Carolina Shores delays single voting district consideration

    CAROLINA SHORES—Town commissioners tabled consideration Tuesday of a proposal to create a single voting district in the town.

    At issue is N.C. House Bill 742, which created two voting districts in the town after Carolina Shores involuntarily annexed the Village at Calabash in 2003.

    Commissioner Tom Puls, who proposed tabling the matter, said the bill was adopted to ensure the newly annexed community, which became voting District 1 for town elections, always had representation on the board. Carolina Shores proper became District 2 for local elections.

  • Second annual Beacon health expo a 'huge success'

    SHALLOTTE—More than 500 people came out Saturday to The Brunswick Beacon’s second annual health expo at West Brunswick High School.

    Event coordinator Christy Williamson, who called the health expo “a huge success,” said this year’s attendance was up from last year because of word of mouth from last year’s inaugural event.

    Fifty-five vendors were on hand, including doctors, pharmacists, chiropractors, medical supply vendors and various nonprofit agencies.

  • Ocean Isle Beacher tries to keep it warm at Alaskan Iditarod

    I have been running wide open going from meeting to meeting, picking up gear, shooting shots and being involved in this incredible adventure known as The Iditarod.

    It’s cold! On the morning of March 1, it is around 15 degrees with a 14 mph wind (which is like a sharp knife shooting in you) bringing the wind chill to around zero.

    It’s 7 a.m. (11 a.m. back home) and still very dark. It looks like the middle of the night, but down below you can still see workers and volunteers setting the stage for what will be an incredible event.

  • Brunswick County Democratic Party to have precinct organizational meeting

    The Brunswick County Democratic Party will have its annual precinct organizational meetings during the weeks of March 10 and March 17.

    All meetings are free and open to any registered Democrat residing in the precinct.

    The meetings are scheduled at the following times and locations:

    7 p.m. on March 10: The Town Creek precinct will meet at the Town Creek Community Building. The Boiling Springs Lakes precinct will meet at the BSL Community Center.

  • Artwork, supplies stolen from second art gallery

    SHALLOTTE—A Main Street art store has been robbed, marking the second time artwork has been stolen from a Brunswick County gallery in as many weeks.

    The owner of Calabash Art Gallery, formerly River Bend, at 4806 Main St., reported to Shallotte Police on Feb. 29 that suspects removed a $300 original watercolor, two original art pieces by the same artist worth a total of $200, $150 worth of foam core, three tubes of spacers worth $150 and a $25 box of framing supplies.

  • Leland crime report

    Leland police officers investigated the following incidents and made the following arrests last week. All information is taken directly from patrol activity reports.

    •Larceny of motor fuel at Murphy USA; suspect pumped $43.44 worth of gas and did not pay for it.

    •Pursuant to a traffic stop on U.S. 74-76, Krystal De Leon, 21, of 7014 Bronwyn St., Fayetteville, was cited and released for speeding, careless and reckless driving, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.


    Ocean Isle Beach Police made the following arrest last week. All information is taken directly from OIB incident/investigation reports.

    •Sam Harrison Gaddy, 20, of Ocean Isle Beach, was arrested for possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia including a multicolor pipe with marijuana residue and an electronic scale, and failure to wear a seat belt.

  • Drug report

    Agents with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office made the following arrests last week. The suspects and their charges, which are taken directly from arrest reports, are:

    •Gary Andre Wilson, 22, of 788 Fremont Road, Longs, S.C.; charged with felony possession of cocaine.

    •Frances Diane Vazant, 56, of 435 Orchard Lane, Bolivia; charged with felony possession of cocaine.

  • Crime report

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies investigated the following incidents last week, which are taken directly from sheriff’s office incident reports:

    •Larceny and trespassing on Funston Road; suspect took tractor and several items from victim’s property.

    •Larceny on Whiteville Road in Ash; suspect stole items from victim’s yard.

    •Breaking and entering and property damage on Bird Drive in Shallotte; suspect broke victim’s bedroom window and entered residence, damaging several pieces of furniture.

  • Rose Hill man sentenced to life for murdering wife

    A Rose Hill man convicted of murder has been sentenced to life in prison.

    A Brunswick County jury found Gregory Scott Grosholz, 61, guilty of murdering his wife in December 2005.

    Sampson County Resident Superior Court Judge Thomas Lock sentenced Grosholz to life in prison for the murder his estranged wife Lenka Vaculikova Grosholz on Dec. 29, 2005.
