  • Coastal Ambassador training to focus on salt marsh habitat

    For the June Coastal Ambassador training, ambassadors will take a trip out to a local salt marsh to learn more about its plants and wildlife, as well as to see how the North Carolina Coastal Federation prepares for touch tank activities.

    On June 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., participants will spend time exploring the marsh where federation employees collect specimen for educational activities, including Touch Tank Tuesday.

  • County to complete annual flushing program June 8

    The Brunswick County Public Utilities Department began its annual flushing program April 2. During the past few weeks, public utilities crews have worked to flush all the water mains in the county system. Crews expect to complete the flushing program June 8.

     One of the responsibilities that parents take most seriously is protecting their children from injury, whether it is buckling seat belts in a car or wearing a helmet while riding a bike. And when their kids become teenagers and want to participate in sports or other activities, parents do everything they can to keep their sons and daughters from getting hurt.

  • Trojans’ postseason run ends with fourth-round loss

     SHALLOTTE — West Brunswick’s bid to secure a second consecutive trip to the 3A East Region finals came to a heartbreaking end Friday, May 18, in Shallotte as Cleveland seized an early lead and held off a pair of West Brunswick rallies for a 3-2 win, ending the Trojans’ season and 23-game winning streak.

    Cleveland’s Julia Wiggs struck out six batters in a complete-game effort and smacked a two-run home run in the top of the first inning for the Rams, who advanced to the regional finals.

  • Sudan Daredevils prepare to host 35th Annual Flounder Tourney

     I know many of you are excited about the flounder fishing season here in Brunswick County.

    Is there a better way to kickoff this year’s flatfish season than participating in the 35th Annual Flounder Tournament of the Sudan Daredevils of the South Brunswick Islands Shrine Club?

    I’ll let you be the judge of that.

    I spoke last week with Shriners Bob Gunter and Ron Jessie about this year’s event, which is scheduled for June 8-9 at the Shallotte Point Volunteer Fire Department.

  • Dolphins hammer PHCC in Region X title game, advance to World Series

     Dylan Holmes spent most of the Region X Tournament last week in Burlington serving as Brunswick Community College’s backup catcher.

    Former West Brunswick standout Hunter Ashburn earned the majority of the starts behind the plate for Robbie Allen’s BCC club, but Holmes made his most significant opportunity count on the biggest stage.

    Holmes, who catches for Dolphins’ ace Trent Joiner, found himself in the starting lineup for the May 15 championship game against Patrick Henry Community College.

  • Gentle resigns as West Brunswick women’s lacrosse coach

     Kate Gentle, who guided West Brunswick’s varsity women’s lacrosse team to the second round of the state playoffs for the first time in program history this spring, resigned from her post last week.

    Gentle, who is the only head women’s coach in West Brunswick history, has accepted the head coaching position at North Myrtle Beach (S.C.) High School in South Carolina, she told the Beacon last week.

    Gentle guided the Lady Trojans to a 13-5 record, including an 8-4 mark in Mideastern Conference play, in 2018.
