  • Calabash Mayor-elect Mary Knight already getting to work

    CALABASH—Just a week after being elected mayor, Mary Knight is wasting no time.

    After being elected unopposed in Calabash’s Nov. 8 municipal races, at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning, Nov. 15, Knight was scheduled to meet with town staff about proposed plans to install new walkways in Calabash’s downtown business district.

    Town administrator Chuck Nance, town clerk Kelley Southward and Knight “have been working very, very hard on this,” Knight said.

  • Hearing on landfill expansion continued until December

    BOLIVIA—A special exception hearing for proposed expansion to the county’s construction and demolition landfill has been continued until next month.

    At their meeting Monday Nov. 14, members of the Brunswick County Planning Board voted to continue a quasi-judicial hearing for a special exception permit to expand the county’s construction and demolition landfill until 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20.

  • Man killed in Leland house fire

    A Leland man was killed in a house fire Sunday night.

    Brunswick County Fire Marshal Scott Garner said Garrett Winkler Jr., 51, died of smoke inhalation after his home caught fire Sunday, Nov. 13.

    Around 7:40 p.m. Nov. 13, one of Winkler’s neighbors called 911 to report a structure fire at Winkler’s home at 8060 Rachel Wynd, off U.S. 17 near Leland, Garner said.

    When firefighters from Winnabow, Leland, Northwest and Boiling Spring Lakes arrived it was fully engulfed. Brunswick County EMS also responded.

  • Ash man killed in early morning wreck

    An Ash man was killed early Tuesday morning in a fatal single-vehicle wreck on Big Neck Road in Ash.

    North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper J.M. King said Gary Dewayne White, 44, of 3710 Big Beck Road, Ash, was killed just after midnight Tuesday, Nov. 14.

    King said White was driving his 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck north on Big Neck Road in Ash, about 2.9 miles west of Shallotte, around 12:08 am. Tuesday, Nov. 15.

  • Leland man sentenced to federal prison

    A Leland man has been sentenced to more than 10 years in federal prison for weapons and drug charges.

    Brunswick County assistant district attorney Chris Thomas said Bradley Maurice James of Leland was sentenced to 10 years and three months in federal prison in U.S. District Court in Wilmington on Nov. 10.

    During a Brunswick County jury trial February 2010, James was convicted of possession of a firearm in the furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime and possession with intent to distribute more than 50 kilograms of marijuana, Thomas said.

  • Brunswick County Sheriff's Office crime report

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies investigated the following incidents last week, which are taken directly from sheriff’s office incident reports:

    •Burglary and larceny on North Ridge Drive in Supply; suspect entered victim’s home through a window and stole property, including jewelry, computer, flat-screen TV, iPod and digital camera.

    •Larceny and property damage on Stanley Road in Supply; suspect stole items and damaged victim’s property.

  • Justice for Citizens plans 16th annual candlelight vigil

    LELAND—One hundred eighteen names will be read aloud this Friday night.

    One hundred eighteen people who were lost to violent crimes—murder, domestic violence or drunk driving—will be remembered as part of the 16th annual Justice for Citizens Candlelight Vigil.

    The event is open to the public, and is slated for 7:30 p.m. this Friday, Nov. 18, at First Baptist Church of Leland, 517 Village Road in Leland.

    Birdie Frink, event organizer and co-founder of Justice for Citizens, encourages everyone in the community to attend.

  • Shallotte woman to be on 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire"

    SHALLOTTE—A Shallotte resident is a contestant this week on the hit game show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?”

    Heather Menzel, a U.S. history teacher at South Brunswick High School and the wife of Joe Menzel, a English teacher at West Brunswick High School, taped an episode of the game show with Emmy-award winning Meredith Vieira.

    The episode is set to air Wednesday, Nov.16. “Millionaire” can be seen on WMBF (NBC), weekdays at 7:30 p.m.

  • Two arrested for Ocean Isle Beach area break-ins

    Two suspects were recently arrested for a string of residential breaking and entering incidents reported in the Ocean Isle Beach area.

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Del Routh said Sheriff John Ingram “has been putting a lot of emphasis on breaking and enterings in the county.”
