  • Ocean Ridge men play in winter frolic golf tournament

    The Ocean Ridge men’s winter frolic golf tournament was won by Roger Buck (white tees), Joe Coffini (mixed tees) and Earl Miller (gold tees). The winter frolic is a two-day flighted individual event played on Lion’s Paw and Panther’s Run using 80 percent of handicap with no penalty strokes.
    Dave Janowski’s net 74 on Lion’s Paw led the white tee flight after day one. Roger Buck shot a net 69 on day two on Panther’s Run to win the flight with a score of 144. Janowski was second at 146 and George Cassidy and George Brooks tied at 148.

    Young golfers from throughout the area are invited to participate in The First Tee of Brunswick County spring programs. Classes are open to youngsters of all ages and skill levels, and it offers programs options to fit a family schedule.

  • Scores, highlights of area golf leagues

    The Beachcombers played a two-nets tournament Friday at Eastport. The winners with a score of 125 (-15) were Bob Brownley, Paul Michal and Roger Dunham. Finishing in second with a 126 (-14) were Jim Beairsto, Bob Smith and Dan O’Connell. Low rounds: Paul Michal, 83, and Dan O’Connell, 88. Low nets were Paul Michal, 63; Dan O’Connell, 65; Bob Smith, 67; and Bob Brownley 68. Paul Michal is golfer of the week

  • Chiropractor discusses fitness, weight loss and golf

    Dr. Glenn Lundy has been in our area for eight years. His chiropractic offices are in Shallotte and he can be seen regularly playing golf around the county. He loves the game and has a single-digit handicap.
    A tall, athletic man with a quick wit and a gift of gab, he met me for lunch last week at the Purple Onion, where we discussed golf and fitness, health and nutrition.
    “People spend their whole life working towards retiring on a golf course, but then when it happens, they are too ill, too fat, too out of condition to play the game. What use is it?

  • Affiniti to manage Thistle Golf Club

    Affiniti Golf Partners has been retained to manage Thistle Golf Club, a semi-private facility in Sunset Beach, according to the company’s founding partner, Steve Willy.
    In addition to managing all golf operations, Affiniti will oversee the property owners association, real estate sales, membership, marketing, finance, dining and special events functions at Thistle Golf Club.

  • Hewett accepts Australia all-star volleyball invitation

    West Brunswick High School junior Meeka Hewett has accepted an invitation to participate in the Down Under Sports volleyball tournaments in Australia. She will be part of the East Central Conference team during the summer.
    Volleyball has been a part of the Down Under Sports Tournaments since 1999 and is now in its 15th year. Teams from the United States will compete in an All-American beach volleyball tournament and a two-day International indoor volleyball tournament.
