  • West softball rolls to first-round win over Western Harnett

SHALLOTTE – West Brunswick’s varsity softball team rolled into the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3A state playoffs on a 20-game winning streak.

The Trojans reached 21 consecutive victories with relative ease as they dispatched Western Harnett in the first round of the postseason tournament Wednesday, May 9, in Shallotte.

Sophomore Peyton Daniels keyed the offensive attack, finishing 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, four RBIs and two runs.

  • Beeler pitches Trojans into third round of state playoffs

SHALLOTTE – Junior right-hander Morgan Beeler wasn’t short on confidence following West Brunswick’s 9-0 second-round win over Fike High School on Friday, May 11, in Shallotte.

“I think we’re going all the way,” Beeler said.

If the diminutive flamethrower pitches the way she did against the Demons in the second round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3A state playoffs, she might be right.

  • Rapidly-growing sport emerging as a Brunswick County favorite

Two weeks ago when I made the trek to Holden Beach for the “Battle of the Beaches” pickleball tournament, I didn’t know what pickleball was.

I guess I knew the general concept. Smaller court, smaller racquets or paddles, but similar to tennis. You have to smack a ball and keep it in between the lines, so in a sense it’s kind of like baseball, too!

  • BCC advances to Region X title game after winning semifinal slugfest

It looked more like a football score, but the Brunswick Community College baseball team found a way to fend off Patrick Henry Community College in a Region X semifinal tournament game in Burlington on Sunday, May 13, in a game that lasted until roughly 12:50 a.m. into Monday morning.

  • Smith claims 400-meter crown at 3A East Regional

South Brunswick’s Jelonnie Smith dominated the Brunswick County high schools track and field meet last month at North Brunswick High School in Leland.

She’s made a habit out of collecting hardware at different meets throughout her career and last weekend’s 3A East Regional event at Mt. Olive University was no different.

Smith blew by her competition in the 400-meter run to earn a first-place finish and regional championship in a time of 58.60 seconds, which was nearly two full seconds better than her next closest competitor.
