  • Horry County police launch new mobile app

    The Horry County (S.C.) Police Department (HCPD) has announced the launch of the new HCPD mobile police app, developed by Applied Webology LLC.

    A crime-fighting application that enables users to have a real-time citizen reporting platform, it will allow tipsters the ability to send photos and videos regarding traffic complaints and crime tips. This platform will directly link tips received to the respective unit best able to respond allowing a secure two-way conversation between app users and the department.

  • Oak Island hurricane presentation May 22

    Oak Island town staff will host a hurricane preparation presentation from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, at Oak Island Town Hall Council Chambers, 4601 E. Oak Island Drive.

    Presenters from the Oak Island police and fire departments, along with the National Weather Service, Brunswick County Emergency Management and American Red Cross, will attend to answer questions and share information.

    All are invited.

  • Coastal reserve site committees to meet

    Local advisory committees for eight coastal reserves, including two in Brunswick County, will meet this month.

    The Bird Island Reserve Local Advisory Committee will meet at 1 p.m. May 22 at Sunset Beach Town Hall, 700 Sunset Blvd. N. in Sunset Beach.

    The Bald Head Woods Reserve Local Advisory Committee will meet at 10 a.m. May 23 at the Bald Head Island Conservancy Auditorium, 700 Federal Road on Bald Head Island.

    All meetings are open to the public.

  • Leland man accused of raping child nearly a decade ago

    A Leland man is accused of raping a child nearly 10 years ago.

    Curtis Steven Pryor, 59, of Cottonwood Trail was arrested May 1 and charged with first-degree rape and first-degree sex offense with a child.

    Warrants show Pryor committed the crimes against a child younger than 13 between June 1 and July 2, 2008.

    A former law enforcement officer faces drug and embezzlement charges.

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Vice-Narcotics Unit agents arrested 42-year-old John Blasingame, of Amber Pines Drive in Leland, after a traffic stop on Chappell Loop Road in Leland on Thursday night, May 4.

  • Hans chosen president of state Community College System

    The State Board of Community Colleges on May 1 elected Peter Hans, formerly of Southport, as the ninth president of the North Carolina Community College System.

    Following the board meeting, Hans was introduced at a news conference attended by Gov. Roy Cooper, Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger and House Speaker Tim Moore.
