  • Holden Beach named Best Family Beach in the U.S.

    Holden Beach has been named the best family beach in the United States by Stephen P. Leatherman, also known as “Dr. Beach.”

    For more than 20 years Leatherman, director for coastal research at Florida International University in Miami, has released an annual list of America’s top 10 beaches. This year he’s singled out Holden Beach as an outstanding place for families, according to “American Profile” magazine.

    Bar association hosts annual banquet
    The Brunswick County Bar Association’s second annual Law Day banquet took place on Thursday, April 19, at 101 Stone Chimney Road in Supply. The guest speaker was the Honorable Justice Paul M. Newby of the North Carolina Supreme Court.
    Five $500 high school scholarships were awarded. Recipients were Kenneth Shadid and Brendan Ussery of South Brunswick High School, Amy Sapp and Matthew Emerson of West Brunswick High School and Erin Phelps of Brunswick County Early School.

  • Brunswick Novant Medical Center recognizes hospital volunteers

    SUNSET BEACH—Brunswick Novant Medical Center is recognizing the hospital’s 126 volunteers for 18,300 hours of time they contributed to the hospital in 2011.

  • Lee visits Roger Bacon Academy

    “I’m impressed!” stated Howard N. Lee, former mayor of Durham, N.C. State Senator for 10 years and chairman of the State Board of Education. His last appointment was executive director of the Education Cabinet under Gov. Bev Perdue. Lee made the remarks after visiting classrooms on the campus of The Roger Bacon Academy’s Charter Day School in Leland.

  • Junior Gardeners mark club’s year end

    Dirt Diggers, Junior Master Gardeners, 4-H Club ended its club year with a special speaker, awards and much more.
    They first met special speaker Caroline O’Brien and her newest recruit, Luke, a service dog. The children were excited to learn about how she trains these dogs to help disabled adults. After many questions and a pet good-bye, they continued their meeting.

  • Marketplace offers custom design ideas

    Calabash art gallery Sunset River Marketplace is featuring Feed Your Eclectic Soul through May 31. According to gallery owner and design consultant Ginny Lassiter, the group exhibition is “a showing of custom design ideas, fine crafts and gently loved pieces from the past.”
    Lassiter and fellow designer Beth Pethtal of Sunset Beach have created a number of vignettes, each including antiques, seating, pillows, art and other pieces.

    Cedar Grove Middle School has announced its third nine-weeks honor rolls:

  • Students participate in bookmark contest

    This year, the Friends of the Rourk Library encouraged library usage with the younger population in the community. The idea was to have each third-grade student at Union Primary School design a bookmark using the theme, “What My Library Means to Me.” The response was more than 120 submissions, each with a colorful design and message.
