  • BCC women rally for victory

    The Brunswick Community College women’s basketball team beat Cape 70-66 Saturday at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center gym.
    The Dolphins hit three straight 3-pointers in the final minutes in rallying for the victory. Until then, BCC had hit one of 11 3-pointers in the game.

  • BCC Dolphins defeat Cape Fear in overtime

    The Brunswick Community College Dolphins’ men’s basketball team beat rival Cape Fear Community College 90-76 in overtime on Saturday.
    The Dolphins started strong at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness and Aquatics Center gym and led by as many as nine points in the first half.
    Cape Fear stormed back and tied the score at the half. The second half was a back-and-forth nail biter to the end of regulation. In overtime, the Dolphins scored quickly and took control, never letting Cape Fear gain any momentum.

  • Sports calendar

    Winter fishing seminar
    A winter fishing seminar will take place from 9 a.m-4:30 p.m. Feb. 2 at the Oak Island Recreation Center.
    Fishing captains Jerry Dilsaver and Jimmy Price will share tips and techniques that may make you catch more fish. Capt. Dilsaver will cover king and offshore fishing. Capt. Price will talk about flounder and inshore species.
    The fee is $60 per person in advance ($70 at the door) and those attending will receive a bag filled with samples, lunch and door prizes.

  • Tournament of Champions to be played at Crow Creek

    Crow Creek will host the 2013 Brunswick Beacon Tournament of Champions in the fall. This is the 10th anniversary of the tournament, which started in 2004.
    I am delighted with the venue. This spectacular layout is scenic and long, but fair. It is always in excellent condition, thanks to the efforts of superintendent Joe Jamison.
    Last week, Beacon representatives met with the staff of Crow Creek and finalized the plans for this year’s event. The dates are Nov. 16-17.

  • Funding for schools’ SROs should continue

    As a newspaper, we’ve been firm with assertions regarding spending taxpayer dollars during the economic downturn.
    We’ve called for governments of all sizes and their related and varied agencies to reduce spending, don’t raise taxes and don’t spend money if it’s not imperative to do so.
    But a recent decision to shell out almost a quarter of a million dollars in school revenue won’t get a lashing from us.

  • BCC beats Johnston Jaguars 73-61

     The Brunswick Community College men’s basketball team beat Johnston Community College 73-61 Jan. 16 at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center gym.

    For BCC (12-6), Quinton Morrow scored 27 points, Cam Jones 10 and Montez Loman nine.

    Other BCC scorers: MaKenzi Kurvits-Statum 3, Tre’ Francisco 2, D.J. Rowell 2, Darrion Eastmon 5, Khari Faison 6, Demarkus Forbes 3, Kenny Jackson 6.
