  • CGMS Students collect books for Literacy Council

    A few members of the Cedar Grove Middle School Junior National Honor Society decided to have a book drive to help out The Brunswick County Literacy Council. The society requires all members perform eight hours of community service each semester.
    The book drive lasted the entire month of May and the deadline was May 30. A grand total of 1,338 books were collected. Sixth-grade students donated 293 books, seventh-grade students donated 713 books and eighth-grade students donated 332 books.

  • Students win patriotic art exhibition

    Students from South Brunswick High School are the local winners in the annual Young American Creative Patriotic Art Competition sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7288 in Calabash, Post 8866 in Holden Beach and Post 10400 in Boiling Spring Lakes.
    During an award ceremony at the school on May 7, the ladies auxiliaries presented certificates and checks to the following students:
    Post 7288: Myles Williams, first place; Emily Coring, second place; and Sarah Hennessey, third place.

  • The difference in barbecue depends on your region in the state

    Regardless of what a lot of “outsiders” may say, in North Carolina, barbecue means pulled pork. The word “barbecue” is used as a noun, not a verb or an adjective. When you ask for a plate of barbecue around here, you’re going to get a plate of steaming pulled (or chopped) pork, along with some coleslaw and hush puppies, as well.

    Jessica Anne Lewis of Shallotte and Michael Kristopher Lancaster of Holden Beach were married May 19 at Camp United Methodist Church in Shallotte.
    The Rev. Richard C. Vaughn officiated the ceremony.
    The bride is the daughter of Alan and Tammie Lewis of Shallotte and granddaughter of Louise Leonard Bennett and the late Mansel Glenn Bennett, and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Dale Lewis and the late Bobbie Duke Lewis, all of Shallotte.

    Stephanie J. Lindsey and Jahmai A Grissett-Hewett of Supply are the parents of a son, Mahkhi Jahkeem Grissett-Hewett, born at 12:31 p.m. April 25 at Brunswick Novant Medical Center, weighing 8 pounds, 10 ounces and measuring 21 inches in length.

    The Lockwood Folly Ladies Golf Association played its member-guest tournament June 2. The theme this year was “be-dazzled and be-jeweled.” Ladies and their guests played a two-person, one best ball gross and one best ball net format. Overall gross: Debi Worley and Tracy Redgrave, 82. Overall net: Mary Ann Haas and Jean White, 59.

    The Beachcombers played a Texas scramble Friday at Carolina Shores. The winners with a score of 240 (-48) were Chick Russo, Bill McDavit, Tom Culverwell and Bill Cameron. In second at 185 (-31) were Bob Smith, Fred Ortiz and Gary Gutheil. Gross: Chick Russo, 80. Net: Bill Cameron and Bill McDavit, 59. Bill Cameron is golfer of the week.
