  • Ocean Ridge plays Winter Frolic Tourney

    The Ocean Ridge MGA played its 12th annual Winter Frolic Tournament Jan. 9 at Lion’s Paw.
    The event was shortened to one day because of a weather cancellation on Jan. 11. The tournament was a flighted, individual, low-net competition using 80 percent of handicap.
    No penalty strokes were assessed for out-of-bounds, water hazards, lost balls, unplayable lies or other penalty situations. All ties were broken by a match of cards.
    White tee flight: 1. Charlie Augone, 70; 2. Bob Dugan, 73; 3. Roger Buck, 73; 4. Greg Kent, 75.

  • Flaccavento scores first hole-in-one

  • Local athletes win medals in skiing competition

    Four Brunswick County athletes won medals in the Special Olympics North Carolina Winter Games.
    Richard Cummings in the AS Alpine glide (yellow) won a silver medal. Derrick Green in the AS Alpine novice slalom (green) won a bronze medal. Chris Robinson in the AS Alpine novice slalom (green) won a bronze medal. Adrianne Tribble in the AS Alpine Novice Slalom (green) won a silver medal.
    Three received participation ribbons: Matthew Hoffman, AS Alpine novice slalom (green), Dion Smith, AS Alpine novice slalom (green) and Juan Velez, AS Alpine novice slalom (green).

  • Scores, highlights of area golf leagues

    The four-ball match Jan. 9 was won by the team of Bob Nobes, Tom Arney, Chuck Hornfeck and Ron Ardvison with a score of +6. The team of Dave Harper, Bernie Gruzlewski, Jim Pope and Les Craft finished second. In third was the team of George Edwards, Paul Salerno, Al Ostrager and Tom Kronyak.

  • Buying new clubs: A great experiment

    Two months ago, I went out and bought myself a Christmas (birthday, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and anniversary) present: new clubs.
    In this column I often stress the importance of lessons, of regular practice and using clubs that have been fitted to you personally.
    During the golf season, I take lessons and I practice. I enjoy pounding my driver and hitting wedges to a practice green. I like throwing balls into a bunker to see if I can get them all out without a single “leavey.” Putting to targets on a large practice green is fun.

  • Senior golf program continues in 2012

    Dates and courses have been set for the 55+ Senior Golf Program. Golfers play once a month at different golf course throughout Brunswick County for a reasonable fee and a chance to win prizes.
    Golfers can pick and choose which months they want to play.
    Of note, the Gator Games qualifier is April 26 at Brierwood Golf Club. This is for Brunswick Gator Senior Games participants only.

  • Scented baits are effective in enticing redfish and specks

    February is almost upon us and that means anglers are out tossing fishing lures trying to catch schooled up speckled trout and redfish. They are also out at boat shows and tackle shops buying the many different kinds of lures that are used to target specks and red drum today.

    TABOR CITY—Former state Sen. R.C. Soles Jr. was found not guilty Friday in a September 2011 assault case, after his accuser testified to lying about some of his claims in an effort to get money from North Carolina’s longest-serving lawmaker.
