  • Brunswick County Teen Court set for June 26

    The next session of Brunswick County Teen Court will be Tuesday, June 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brunswick County Courthouse. Brunswick County Teen Court is a partnership program between Communities In Schools of Brunswick County and the Brunswick County District Attorney’s Office, made possible through financial support provided by the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council and Brunswick County.

  • Oyster shell bagging June 27 in Sunset Beach

    The North Carolina Coastal Federation invites volunteers to help bag oyster shells Wednesday, June 27, from 10 a.m. to noon in Sunset Beach.

    Volunteers will meet at the main fire station and fill mesh bags with oyster shells to help build a living shoreline in the Intracoastal Waterway at Sunset Beach Town Park. Volunteers will also cut, tie, lift and stack oyster bags.

    This event is best suited for adults, organized groups and supervised children 12 and older and will accommodate a wide range of physical abilities.

    Attorney General Josh Stein announced June 15 a $100 million settlement with Citibank for fraudulent conduct involving U.S. Dollar (USD) LIBOR. This is a benchmark interest rate that affects financial instruments worth trillions of dollars and has a widespread impact on global markets and consumers.

  • Holden Beach to have ribbon-cutting for Bridgeview Park

    Holden Beach will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday, July 10, at 1 p.m. at Bridgeview Park.

    There will be a short ceremony followed by snacks and music.

    Tide Dye will begin at 2 p.m. and will be held in the park as part of the grand opening activities. Normal fees apply to Tide Dye, but the ceremony is free to attend.

  • Coalition to launch its inaugural County Care Fair

    The Brunswick Wellness Coalition (BWC) is launching its inaugural County Care Fair, rotating between three Wal-Mart locations in Brunswick County: Monday, July 16, in Leland; Thursday, Aug. 16, in Southport; and Tuesday, Sept. 18, in Shallotte.

    The fair will take place at each location from 5 to 8 p.m. and will offer a wide range of health screenings, education and kid-friendly activities. There will also be grocery store tours and giveaways.

  • OIB planning board to meet July 17

    The Ocean Isle Beach Planning Board will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, at the Betty S. Williamson Meeting Hall at 3 W. Third St. on Ocean Isle Beach.

    The board meets the third Tuesday of the month.

  • Carolina Shores issues flood maps alert for homeowners

    Carolina Shores announced new flood maps are being adopted Aug. 28 and the blackout window for flood insurance purchase before the effective date is July 28. Homeowners must purchase flood insurance by the July 28 date to qualify for a reduced rate.

    Carolina Shores homeowners are advised to check the town website on flood maps, carolinashoresnc.com/floodmapmodernization, and talk with their insurance agent about a National Flood Insurance Program policy.

  • VA Whole Health Workshop set for July 31

    A VA Whole Health Workshop is scheduled for July 31 at 1 p.m. at Wilmington VA Health Care Center (WHCC), Room 1026 at 1705 Gardner Road in Wilmington.

    Whole Health recognizes the patient as a whole person and helps support his or her unique needs, said Dr. Sita Kanithi, a clinical psychologist who supervises Fayetteville VAMC’s Peer Support Specialists.

  • ‘An Evening with Sam Quinones’ scheduled Aug. 23

    The Brunswick County Treatment Court will present ‘An Evening with Sam Quinones,’ author of “Dreamland,” the true tale of America’s opiate epidemic, on Thursday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. at Odell Williamson Auditorium on the campus of Brunswick Community College.

    Doors open at 6:15 p.m.

    This is a free event. The first 250 attendees will receive a free copy of “Dreamland” (one per family).
