  • ‘Tax Reform and Your Business’ panel May 30

    The next installment of the Brunsco Biz Breakfast Series will be Wednesday, May 30, on “Tax Reform and Your Business.”

    Congressman David Rouzer and Davis Milligan, CPA, PA, will explain how the new tax reforms signed into law last December will affect local businesses.

    Doors open at 7:30 a.m. at Virginia Williamson Event Center in Odell Williamson Auditorium at Brunswick Community College, 150 College Road NE in Bolivia. The program begins at 8 a.m. Tickets are $15 and includes breakfast. Registration is required.

  • Elections board to finalize primary vote tally Friday

    The Brunswick County Board of Elections will meet Friday, May 18, to finalize the results of the May 8 primary election.

    Elections board director Sara Knotts said the board members will have a pre-canvass meeting at 9:30 a.m. in the elections board office, Building H, 75 Stamp Act Drive NE in Bolivia, to consider 73 provisional ballots and add supplemental absentee ballots.

    The regular canvass meeting will follow at 11 a.m. to finalize the election numbers.

    The primary election saw just 10.10 percent of Brunswick County voters turn out.

  • Butler to participate in GenX session as lawsuit against Chemours looms

    State Rep. Deb Butler, D-Wilmington, who represents northern Brunswick County, and Senate Democratic Leader Dan Blue, D-Raleigh, will discuss the state response to GenX pollution and environmental issues at a May 17 town hall hosted by the State Innovation Exchange (SiX) in Wilmington.

    The event is open to the public from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Hannah Block Center, 120 S. Second St., Wilmington.

    Karyn Bruggeman with SiX said the legislators will also discuss education, health care and the economy and the public will be able to ask questions about the issues.

  • Man accused of robbing woman in Brunswick County

    A Wilmington man is accused of robbing a woman in Brunswick County.

    Brandon Lee Williams, 21, of South 12th Street was arrested May 9 and charged with common law robbery, misdemeanor assault on a female and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

    Warrants show Williams grabbing a woman’s shirt, pushing her and taking $245 from her May 9. He also had digital scales and a used needle when he was arrested.

    Williams remains in the Brunswick County Detention Facility on $10,000 bail.

    BOLIVIA — When she was first told she should go into education, Cheri Skaggs had one response: “No.”

    Last week, the Brunswick County Early College High School principal’s work was affirmed when she was named the North Carolina Association for Scholastic Activities 2018 High School Principal of the Year.

  • Coast Guard rescues snorkeler near Bald Head Island

    The Coast Guard rescued a snorkeler in distress near Bald Head Island on Saturday.

    No one was injured.

    A woman aboard a 30-foot sailboat contacted watchstanders at Sector North Carolina’s command center at 6:13 p.m. via VHF-FM radio channel 16 to report a snorkeler from the boat who was wearing a life jacket became disoriented and drifted too far away, according to a Coast Guard news release.

    Sector North Carolina launched a 29-foot response boat with a small crew from Station Oak Island to find and rescue the snorkeler quickly.
