    To the editor:

    The Ocean Isle Museum Foundation would like to thank all of its 2018 Wine Fest sponsors.

    Donations of time, material and support were critical in making Wine Fest 2018 an outstanding success. Wine Fest sponsors are the reason we can offer a great event and in the long-term offer programs and exhibits to help further our educational mission.

  • Sunset Beach Town Council must listen to its residents

    To the editor:

    There was a Sunset Beach Town Council meeting May 7 where there was a report made by the consultant, Moffatt & Nichols, on the dredging scoping meeting held with state officials. This was followed by public comments when a number of residents got up and spoke on the subject of dredging. Many residents made a resounding plea to proceed with dredging of the whole area defined as the canals, bay and south and north Jinks Creek, giving clear access to the Intracoastal Waterway.

    Editor’s note: The writer was one of three Republicans, including Robert Cruse and incumbent John Thompson, for the District 5 seat on the Brunswick County Board of Education in the May 8 primary and faces Joanne Levitan in the Nov. 6 general election.

    I want to thank Brunswick County residents for advocating for the students this week. I am immensely grateful to the family, friends and loyal supporters who generously contributed their time and effort to my campaign for school board.

    After putting out the word that the Beacon office has been a Girl Scout cookie-free zone — a cookie desert, some might say — for too long, a surprise delivery showed up here at the Beacon.
