  • McCumbee 20th in his first truck race of season
    Making their return to NASCAR Camping World Truck Series competition for the first time since Charlotte over two months ago, the “new look” RBR Enterprises team, armed with new crew chief Kevin “Cowboy” Starland and driver Chad McCumbee, battled their way to a hard-fought 20th-place finish in Saturday night’s American Ethanol 225 at Chicagoland Speedway. “‘Cowboy’ and I are fresh in this RBR Enterprises team, and we wanted to come here to find out where we are at,” said McCumbee, who qualified 28th.

    Brandon Rankin, at nose guard, had one tackle for a 3-yard loss in the Spokane Shock’s season-ending 63-53 home victory over the Tampa Bay Storm on Saturday in Spokane Arena before 8,973 spectators. The Shock finishes 10-8 in the Arena Football League.

  • Brunswick baseball teams lose in tourneys
    Staff Report Lillington beat Brunswick County 13-3 and 4-1 July 18 to win the Pre-Majors Dixie Boys Baseball state championship. Brunswick opened the Pre-Majors state tournament by beating Hope Mills 10-2 July 14 in Kenansville. On July 16, Brunswick beat Lillington 6-1. On July 17 against Duplin National, Brunswick won 7-4 and advanced to the championship round. Six teams played in the tournament. Many of the Brunswick players were on the team that won the Dixie Boys 2011 World Series. The 2012 World Series is July 28-Aug. 1 in Guntersville, Ala.
  • Cougars’ Williams plays in East-West game
    Staff Report GREENSBORO—South Brunswick’s Gary Williams played for the East All-Stars in their 34-9 victory over the West July 18 at Jamieson Stadium. Williams, 5-foot-9, 160 pounds, was a starting cornerback. He made one tackle and assisted on two others. West was a passing team, but Williams and the rest of the East defense held West to 24 completions on 46 attempts. At South, Williams was all-conference as a senior and a junior.

    Staff Report Playing its last home game in its first season in the Central Carolina Scholastic Summer League, West Brunswick beat Laney 15-7 July 16. West, which has already clinched the Southeast Conference title, improved to 12-0. West trailed 6-5 entering the fifth inning but scored six runs after a two-out error. On a 3-2 count with the bases loaded, Hunter Howard hit a three-run double that gave West a 10-6 lead.
  • Dixie Angels win openers in state tourney
    Staff Report The Brunswick County Dixie Angels softball team (ages 9-10) won its first two games in the state tournament in Eden. Brunswick beat Reidsville 11-0 on Saturday night. Amanda Phillips was the winning pitcher. She pitched two innings. Savannah Branch and Katelyn Fulford pitched one each. The girls combined on a no-hitter. Katelyn Fulford had two hits. Branch, Catherine Grainger and Savannah Richmond each had hits.

    Staff Report The West Brunswick baseball team improved to 9-0 in the Central Carolina Summer Scholastic League by beating Hoke County 12-2 in six innings July 3 at West. Hoke, in a difference conference from West Brunswick, dropped to 0-9 in the CCSSL.

    BCC cheerleading camp BCC will be the site for a cheerleading camp 9 a.m.-noon July 23-26 for girls and boys ages 4-14. Early registration is $45 and will end July 15. You may register for the camp on the day of the camp for $60. Each fee covers a camp T-shirt.
