  • Leland National remains unbeaten...

     ASH – Leland National captured the Dixie Youth District 5 championship without suffering a loss.

    Through two rounds of this week’s state tournament at Waccamaw Park in Ash, Leland National has continued its winning ways.

    The 10-year-old all-star squad from northern Brunswick County knocked off South Stanly in the first round Saturday, July 7, before edging Whiteville 2-1 in a winner’s bracket contest Sunday, July 8, in front of a large crowd.

     ASH – It’s been eight years in the making.

    Jeep and Belinda Wilson approached then-Lockwood Folly Dixie Youth assistant coaches William “Little Man” Powell and Brian McDowell about launching a “Buddy Ball” league.

    Buddy Ball would pair special needs youth in Brunswick County with Lockwood Folly Dixie Youth baseball players once a week for an hour-long game.

  • Beach lover Boles leads cleanup...

    Jordan Boles spent four years in the mountains of The Tar Heel State during her time as a student at Appalachian State University.

    Her heart is now at the beach.

    Boles, the marketing director for Carolina Surf School, an Ocean Isle Beach-based company, led a beach cleanup July 3 that she had planned a couple of months in advance.

     We should all take a step back today and think about how fortunate we are.

    I’m guilty of it. I’m sure if you’re honest with yourself, you are, too.

    Let me explain.

    How many of you are familiar with the term “first world problems?”

    For instance, if you hear someone say, “They didn’t have my favorite wine on my first-class flight from New York City to Paris,” that’s considered a first world problem.

    Or how about this one?

     With the summertime heat finally settling in for good, we’re here at the Ocean Isle Fishing Center starting to plan on the season’s fishing pattern. Two of those patterns to track are smaller King mackerel in large numbers just about anywhere you drop a bait and the larger numbers of Spanish mackerel on the beach.

  • Three state tournaments to be...

     Brunswick County will play host to Dixie Baseball’s Junior Boys, Boys and Pre-Majors state tournaments this weekend.

    The Dixie Junior Boys tournament, which is comprised of four teams, is slated to begin Saturday, July 14, at Town Creek Park in Winnabow.

    The Dixie Boys event will also begin Saturday, July 14, at Town Creek Park while the Dixie Pre-Majors field (three teams) will square off at North Brunswick High School beginning Saturday, July 14.
