  • Caraway earns Mideastern...

West Brunswick head wrestling coach Jimmy Caraway reached the 300-win milestone when his squad knocked off perennial power in early January.

Caraway guided several Trojan wrestlers to individual conference and regional titles and the team advanced to the 3A East Region finals before falling to Orange in the state semifinals.

West wrestlers Jacary Bethel and Lincoln Smith placed at the state championships in Greensboro last month.

  • Daniels, Bland cap West...

Rasheed Daniels entered his senior season on West Brunswick’s basketball squad with limited experience at the varsity level.

The senior guard worked tirelessly in the offseason to improve his game and the work paid dividends as Daniels finished off his Trojan career as a second-team Mideastern Conference all-league performer, the league announced in a news release issued March 4.

  • PHOTOS: West Brunswick prepares...

West Brunswick scrimmaged Myrtle Beach High School (S.C.) last weekend in preparation for the 2018 season, which begins Friday, March 2, at Carolina Forest High School (S.C.) in a weekend round-robin tournament.

  • Hutchinson’s 19 points lead...

The Brunswick Community College men’s basketball team opened the season with 10 wins in its first 11 games.

Since that time, not much has gone right for head coach Walter Shaw’s club.

The Dolphins suffered an eight-game losing streak that spanned from the end of December through the last week of January and BCC has only one win in conference play.

  • West Brunswick Booster Club...

Early last month, I received a text message from West Brunswick High School Athletic Director Jimmy Fletcher.

“It’s that time of year again,” Fletcher wrote in the text.

    Yes, indeed.

Fletcher and other West Brunswick High School officials have scheduled the annual Booster Club raffle drawing and dinner for Saturday, March 10, inside the school’s cafeteria beginning at 6 p.m.

I encourage all of our Beacon readers to carve out a free night next Saturday to purchase a $100 ticket.

  • Lady Trojans fall in first round...

West Brunswick’s varsity girls’ basketball team completed its most successful season since the 2005-06 campaign when it dropped its first-round state playoff game to Harnett Central last week.

Harnett Central overcame a halftime deficit and stymied West Brunswick’s offense down the stretch to earn a 54-47 win to advance to the second round of the NCHSAA 3A state basketball playoffs.

Trojan senior Natyra Gore led all West Brunswick scorers with 19 points, while junior center Breanna “B.B.” Mercer netted 18.

  • Superstar Hyman guides Lady...

Katisha Hyman has given her opponents fits in women’s basketball on the junior college basketball level this season.

The sophomore guard continued to do so during Brunswick Community College’s women’s basketball team’s recent three-game winning streak.

Following a two-game losing streak, the Lady Dolphins reeled off a trio of consecutive wins by double figures behind their remarkable second-year guard.
