  • Poulin leads Trojans to 11-4 win...

Senior Ana Poulin scored four goals and dished out three assists as West Brunswick defeated Laney 11-4 in a varsity women’s lacrosse game on April 17 in Shallotte.

The Trojans held a four-goal halftime lead and extended the advantage in the second half to complete the regular-season sweep of the Buccaneers.

Sophomore Cecelia Vergara four goals and had an assist, while junior Gwenna Gentle added a pair of goals and three assists in the victory.

  • A pleasantly surprising start...

     Could it be?

Are the Atlanta Braves actually good? Is it too early to tell? Should I just ride out this heater and enjoy it while I can?

My beloved Braves are off to a great start through the season’s first 20 games.

“We’ve” only lost one series so far and on the heels of taking two of three games from the first-place Mets.

Let’s take a run through the lineup and see what’s gone well to this point.

    We’ll start with the outfield.

  • Mia Adcock’s three goals spur...

SHALLOTTE – Mia Adcock was anything but “MIA” during West Brunswick’s 4-0 victory over Topsail on April 10 at M.H. Rourk Stadium in Shallotte.

The senior midfielder broke a scoreless tie with 2:51 left in the first half before adding a pair of second-half goals in the Trojans’ first Mideastern Conference victory of the 2018 season.

Mia Adcock is a natural forward, but a slew of injuries has forced the speedster to play center midfield for her squad.

  • 100! Mother and daughter...

SHALLOTTE – Gwenna Gentle had nine goals and a measley four assists during her freshman year on West Brunswick’s women’s lacrosse team.

That makes her accomplishment two weeks ago at M.H. Rourk Stadium even Shallotte all the more remarkable.

Gentle poured a shot into the back of the net in the second half of a big victory over county rival South Brunswick for her 100th career goal.

  • Pigott’s eighth-inning single...

SHALLOTTE – Taylor Pigott stepped to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning against Richmond Senior High School in the championship game of the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational on April 4 with the winning run on third base and two outs.

In the seventh inning, the junior right-handed hitter approached West Brunswick softball assistant coach Amanda Fields and told her, “I want to hit again. I want to get up again so bad.”

  • Babson pitches and hits Trojans...

SHALLOTTE – West Brunswick’s varsity baseball team capped an up-and-down week with a 12-0 victory over Kings Academy (S.C.) in the final game of the Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational baseball tournament on April 4 in Shallotte.

Senior Owen McDowell ripped a two-run triple and sophomore Tanner Babson smoked a two-run home run in a six-run bottom of the fourth inning to lift the Trojans to a lopsided win.

Babson started on the mound for West Brunswick and fired three perfect innings that included no baserunners and seven strikeouts.

  • Patrick Reed etches his name in...

I have to eat a large plate of crow this morning.

I didn’t think Patrick Reed had it in him. We’ve seen countless players, including Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth, enter the final round of the Masters with a lead only to succumb to intense Sunday pressure and fall short.

  • Bell optimistic during tennis...

Despite his team’s 1-5 start, West Brunswick men’s tennis coach Bob Bell is optimistic about the future of the program.

The Trojans endured a winless campaign in 2017 before earning a victory over 4A Ashley High School at Ocean Isle Beach Park earlier this year.

Bell spoke about his team’s progess during an interview with the Beacon.

West Brunswick defeated Richmond Senior 3-2 in the April 4 championship game. Junior Taylor Pigott broke a 2-2 tie with a game-winning single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Trojans to the tournament crown.
