  • Trojan baseball, softball squads...

There were high hopes for the baseball and softball teams at West Brunswick High School heading into the 2018 campaign.

The baseball team was fresh off a 2017 season in which it advanced to the fourth round of the state playoffs before dropping an extra-inning thriller in Hampstead at conference foe Topsail.

The softball squad reached the 3A East Regional finals before falling in a best-of-three series against powerhouse Orange.

Needless to say, the expectations were through the roof as the teams opened their respective seasons this year.

  • Beeler shatters personal...

SHALLOTTE - West Brunswick softball assistant coach Amanda Fields set several individual pitching records during her time pitching for the Trojans.

If she hangs around much longer, she might have to watch as Morgan Beeler shatters those marks.

Beeler set yet another personal best ledger with 17 strikeouts against North Brunswick in a 5-0 win on Thursday, March 29, in Shallotte.

The junior right-hander yielded just three hits and one walk in seven innings as the Trojans seized an early lead and never looked back in the shutout victory.

  • Babson, McDowell carry Trojans...

West Brunswick entered the week before spring break with a 4-6 record and searching for a couple of victories over rivalry teams.

The Trojans earned a pair of emphatic victories with an 11-1 win over South Brunswick in a six-inning game in Boiling Spring Lakes on March 27 before earning a 4-0 decision over North Brunswick at Mike Alderson Field in Shallotte on Thursday, March 29.

Sophomore Tanner Babson and senior Owen McDowell combined for seven hits and three RBI in last week’s win over the Scorpions of North Brunswick.

  • Dolphins improve to 19-10 with...

Brunswick Community College’s varsity baseball team continued its hot stretch with a road series win at Lenoir Community College last weekend.

The Dolphins opened a Friday, March 30, doubleheader with a 10-7 victory in a slugfest.

Chris Graham and Scottie McKeon led the way offensively for the Dolphins in the series opener. Graham finished 3-for-6 with a home run, RBI and two runs, while McKeon collected three base hits, an RBI and two runs scored.

  • Abbott’s two goals not enough as...

West Brunswick’s men’s lacrosse team has improved dramatically in the last few seasons, but the young program is still experiencing growing pains competing in one of the toughest lacrosse leagues in the Tar Heel State in the Mideastern Conference.

The Trojans got another taste of the stiff competition in an 18-3 loss at the hands of New Hanover on Friday, March 23, at Legion Stadium in Wilmington.

Senior Chris Abbott scored two goals, while sophomore William Pickard registered a season-high 25 saves for the Trojans.
