  • Walls scores 32 in Dolphins’ OT...

     Spartanburg Methodist beat Brunswick Community College 84-83 in an NJCAA Division I Region 10 men’s basketball game Sunday at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center gym.

    Kameko Walls scored 32 points for BCC (13-12). Marcus Graham scored 16 points and Steve Johnson 10. Spartanburg Methodist is 22-5.

    The victory completed a regular-season sweep. BCC lost 63-53 on Jan. 29 at Spartanburg Methodist.

    Spartanburg led 76-74 in regulation but Tre Francisco, off a pass from Graham, hit a 3-pointer with 2 minutes, 52 seconds left.

  • 11 county wrestlers qualify for...

     

     

     

    John Wiley won a regional championship and was one of six South Brunswick High School wrestlers to advance to the state tourney set for this weekend at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex.

    West Brunswick qualified one wrestler (Ronnie Dellinger) from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A East Regional.

    North Brunswick qualified four from the Class 2A Mideast Regional.

    Games are hosted by higher seed and will be played Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Game time is 7 p.m. unless a doubleheader is played at 6:30 pm and 8 pm. Records are regular season marks used for seeding and do not include conference tournament results. Seeds are indicated. These are the pairings with Brunswick County teams.

  • BCC rallies in ninth, wins in...

     The Brunswick Community College baseball team beat Stanly Community College 6-5 in 10 innings Saturday, scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the score 5-5 and then scoring the winning run in the 10th on sophomore center fielder Ryan Collins’ double.

    The score was tied 3-3 in the eighth but Stanly scored on a run on a wild pitch and scored in the ninth on a home run.

  • Scorpions finish second in Farm...

     West Bladen beat North Brunswick 82-68 Friday in winning the Farm Bureau Insurance Waccamaw Conference boys’ basketball tournament in the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center gym.

    Senior forward Legrande Roseborough scored 23 points for North (14-8). Junior guard Nik Sloan scored 17 points. Senior guard Jeremy Young, scoreless in the first half, hit four 3-pointers in the second half and scored 14 points. Junior guard Adam Jacobs scored nine points.

  • New high school football rules

    High school football players must sit out one play next year if their helmet comes off while the ball is live.

    In cases where the helmet comes completely off without it being directly attributable to a foul by the opponent, the player will have to leave the game for at least one down.

    North baseball fish fry Feb. 18
    The annual North Brunswick baseball fish fry will be 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 18 at the NBHS baseball field. Plates are $6 each and include boneless fish fillets, cole slaw, baked beans and hushpuppies. Fifteen or more plates can be delivered. All proceeds go to the baseball program at NBHS.     March 21: Lockwood Folly Country Club, $40. 8 a.m. sign-in, 9 a.m. shotgun start. Price includes cart fee, greens fee, cart attendants and prizes.

    Maritime Museum tourney March 21
    The third annual N.C. Maritime Museum at Southport Golf Classic, sponsored by the museum’s Friends organization, will take place at 11 a.m. March 21 at The Members Club at St. James Plantation.
    The entry fee of $85 per golfer covers golf, cart fee, happy hour and dinner, plus a hole-in-one challenge. All proceeds go toward the museum’s acquisition of a submarine periscope and continued renovation of the museum facility. Golfers may sign up at friendsncmmsouthport.org.

  • Brick Landing plays Valentine’s...

    On Friday, Brick Landing residents played a Valentine’s tourney, their first twilight golf event in more than two years. Unfortunately, the rains swept in late Friday afternoon, so the nine-hole tournament was canceled after seven holes. But the 38 participants gathered in the newly renovated clubhouse and had a fine time anyway.
