  • Solid fishing this winter is...

    The extremely mild winter continues and Brunswick County anglers are still enjoying unusually good catches of speckled trout and redfish, and I have never seen a winter when so many flounder were still inshore. The usually high activity of baitfish, shrimp and crabs in the water is making this winter a little like an early spring.
    Redfish schools are hanging around in the backwaters, feeding and hiding from dolphins, and you can find schools that number in the hundreds of fish.

  • South swimmers qualify for state...

    A five-swimmer South Brunswick boys’ team finished sixth out of 31 teams in a state-qualifying regional Saturday. The NCHSAA Class 3A state meet is Feb. 9 at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.
    That was one of the highlights for coach Wes Cross’ swim teams.
    “The women’s and the men’s team had an awesome swim meet Saturday,” Cross said. “Although I expected them to swim well, they by far exceeded Kevin Sullivan’s and my expectations.”

  • National Deep-Water Exercise...

    As a part of the celebration of Deep Water Exercise Month, the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center is offering free introduction to deep-water aerobics classes. These special classes will be offered at 10 a.m. Feb. 13 and 5:30 p.m. Feb. 15.

    North baseball fish fry set for Feb. 18
    The annual North Brunswick baseball fish fry will be 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 18 at the NBHS baseball field. Plates are $6 each and include boneless fish fillets, cole slaw, baked beans and hushpuppies. Fifteen or more plates can be delivered. All proceeds go to the baseball program at NBHS.   • Seniors lead Lady Trojans to...

     Seniors Jasmine Jackson scored 13 points and Nicole Turner a season-high 11 as West Brunswick beat South Brunswick 39-15 Feb. 7 in the final basketball game of the regular season for the Trojans.

    The victory completed a regular-season sweep. West, starting an all-senior lineup on Senior Night, shut out the Cougars in the first quarter in taking a 10-0 lead. 

  • West JV wins conference,...

     The West Brunswick High School junior varsity boys’ basketball team won the conference championship Feb. 7 by beating South Brunswick 56-48.

    The Trojans, coached by Jason Younts, finished 11-1 in the conference and 15-2 overall. They ended the season by winning 11 straight games.

    Younts gave all the credit to varsity coach Eric Davis, saying his leadership was the foundation for the successful junior varsity season.

  • Dolphins defeat Spartanburg Prep

     Quinton Morrow made two steals in the final minute to help Brunswick Community College beat Spartanburg Prep 68-57 Sunday on Walter Shaw Court at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center gym.

    For BCC (12-10), Steve Johnson scored 13 points, Morrow 11 and Alex Tucker nine.

    BCC led 41-28 at the half and maintained the 13-point lead as Tucker scored seven of the Dolphins’ first 10 points. Tucker later suffered an apparent leg injury and did not return.

  • County high school wrestling...

     LELAND—The three county high schools ended their regular season of wrestling with the conference championships Saturday at North Brunswick. Two West freshmen were among the six Trojans who won county titles.

    At 106, West senior Ronnie Dellinger beat South senior Steven Van Voight 9-0. Dellinger is 34-2.

    At 113, West freshman Jyquan Green beat South sophomore Jarrett Walls 5-3. Green is 6-7.

    At 120, South sophomore Dustin Jones won by injury default over North’s Gabe Self. Jones is 22-21.
