    Two Brunswick basketball players and two Brunswick basketball teams won gold medals in the 2012 Special Olympics North Carolina Eastern Basketball Tournament March 17 in Johnston County.
    Warren Williams and Marcus Small won gold medals in basketball skills.
    Heather King won a silver medal in basketball skills. Anna Scheitrumpf won a fourth-place ribbon in basketball skills. Maurice Edge won a fifth-place ribbon in basketball skills.

    The West Brunswick boys’ tennis team lost two matches last week, losing 9-0 in a non-conference match against Laney and 5-4 to Whiteville in a conference match. West is 2-3 in the conference. South won two matches and is 5-0 in the conference, 11-1 overall. Summaries are below.

    LELAND—Playing in rain in the first six holes and in sunshine in the final 12, West Brunswick senior Greg Hensley shot a 73 and won by one stroke the second Waccamaw Conference golf match of the season March 19 at Magnolia Greens.
    Hensley shot 1-over par on the 6,023-yard course.

  • West girls, North boys win track...

    The West Brunswick girls and the North Brunswick boys won track-and-field meets March 22 at West.
    In the four-team girls’ meet, West scored 109 points and North 88. In the boys’ meet, North scored 133.3 points and West 95. South Columbus and East Bladen also competed.
    The Lady Trojans won nine events.
    West senior Jasmine Jackson won four events: the 200 (28 seconds), the high jump (4-feet-8), the long jump (15-4.5) and the triple jump (29-9).
    Shelly Chavis won the 800 (2:56) and 2-mile (15:58).

    Week two of the Waccamaw conference golf season heated up between the top two ranked teams, West Bladen and West Brunswick. On March 20, the Knights beat the Trojans 316-318 at Magnolia Greens Golf Course to remain in first.
    On March 22, the Trojans won a scorecard tiebreaker after each team finished even with 317 strokes at Land-O-Lakes Golf Club.

  • West beats South 14-2, improves...

     BOILING SPRING LAKES—West Brunswick beat South Brunswick 14-2 in seven innings March 27 and improved to 6-0 this baseball season in the Waccamaw Conference.

    West trailed 2-1 entering the top of the fifth but scored five runs in taking a 6-2 lead en route to the victory.

  • Trojans defeat South Columbus;...

     The West Brunswick High School baseball team beat South Columbus 6-3 Friday night and improved to 5-0 in the Waccamaw Conference, 6-4 overall.

    Ryan Caison was the winning pitcher and Landon Tilley got the save.

    Caison pitched 4.2 innings, giving up seven hits and one earned run. He walked none, hit one and struck out six.

    South Columbus had runners on base in the first three innings, but Caison ended the first and third innings with a strikeout on a 3-2 count and ended the second with a strikeout.

  • Lady Trojans defeat East Bladen...

     ELIZABETHTOWN—Sophomore forward Carla Zio scored four goals as the West Brunswick girls’ soccer team beat East Bladen 6-1 in a conference game March 21.

    Amanda Davison and Karson Lewis also scored as the Trojans’ played their best game of the season.

    “The 1-0 loss to Ashley (after a 7-1 defeat) really, I think, was a turning point for us,” West coach Laura Hickman said. “It proved to the girls themselves that they are capable and that they can finish very strong in this conference overall.”

    Coed softball registration
    Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for the 2012 coed softball leagues. Team registration fees are $500. Teams will play on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday evenings at Lockwood Folly Park, Shallotte Park or Smithville Park. The league managers’ meeting is 6:30 p.m. May 10 at the Parks and Recreation Building in the second floor conference room.
