  • Many reports of January flounder...

    The mild winter is certainly having a positive effect on Brunswick County inshore fishing, especially compared to last year’s harsh stay-at-home conditions. I can’t remember a January in local waters when I have gotten so many reports from anglers catching flounder. The redfish schools roaming the shallows are huge and accessible just about every day.

  • Conference wrestling tourney...

    The three county high school wrestling teams will compete Saturday in the conference championship tournament at North Brunswick. The tourney is set to begin at 10 a.m. and competition will take place on two mats.
    The county middle schools will also have their championship tourney on Saturday at North. Wrestlers will compete in eight-wrestler brackets. Leland Middle School is the defending champion.

    LELAND—North Brunswick High School football player Keilin Rayner has decided to play football at Duke University.

    He announced his decision on signing day, Feb. 1, at North Brunswick High School.

    Teammate and running back Jaron Smyre also signed that day, selecting Campbell University.

    As late as Jan. 25, Rayner was undecided.

    “He has narrowed it down to Duke and ECU, his high school coach, Garry Bishop, said Jan. 25.

    The No. 3 C.J. Wilson Racing Mazda Speed driven by Chad McCumbee and Jason Saini finished 15th in the ST class in the season-opening Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge BMW Performance 200 Friday at Daytona International Speedway.
    The team qualified 28th and completed all 58 laps at an average speed of 80.977 mph.

    Brunswick umpires’ meeting Feb. 5
    The Brunswick County Umpires Association is seeking baseball and softball umpires for the 2012 season.
    Those interested must have knowledge of the game, be able to attend clinics and meetings, pass certification and be able to travel. Members’ fee and certification fee are also mandatory.

  • Lady Trojans lose to East Bladen

     The West Brunswick girls’ basketball team missed 20 of 23 free throws in a 42-26 home loss Jan. 31 to East Bladen.

    East Bladen hit two 3-pointers in taking a 29-18 lead into the fourth quarter. West rallied and cut the lead to 29-25. A layup by Kianna Pigott began the rally. She then made a steal and passed to Nicole Turner on the left wing, who hit a 3-pointer and cut the lead to 29-23 with 5:35 left.

    After an East Bladen turnover, a pass from Pigott to Allison Brown led to a basket, cutting the lead to four points.

  • West Brunswick boys upset No. 8...

     West Brunswick beat East Bladen 57-49 in a conference boys’ basketball game Jan. 31.

    The loss was just the second in the conference and third of the season for the Eagles.

    NCPreps.com ranks East Bladen (16-3) No. 8 in Class 2A. The Trojans, a Class 3A team, improved to 5-5 in the conference, 10-10 overall, its best record in a while.
