SENECA, S.C.—Monroe, La., scored four runs in the first inning off three Brunswick County errors and went on to win the Junior Dixie Boys World Series 8-3 Aug. 3 at the Shaver Complex.

Louisiana finished unbeaten in the Series, and Brunswick’s only losses were to it. In four  of its five victories, Louisiana scored at least 13 runs. But head coach Ryan Flemister said the team did not hit the ball as well in the state tournament as it did in the World Series.

LELAND—Jo’Landa White, a North Brunswick High School graduate, has signed a letter of intent to play softball at St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh.

White, who has a 3.7 GPA, has won so many trophies and medals there is no more room on the family’s trophy shelf.

“I received a full ride on a softball scholarship,” Jo’Landa said. “I plan to major in biology and become a nurse.”

Inshore fishing is locked into its usual summertime pattern now, featuring all the things we have grown to love about that: sweltering days, unpredictable thunderstorms and a lack of fish during the heat of the day. There is still some action to be had, however, especially in the early mornings or after dark.

  • Wayne Moody gives back as...

I met Wayne Moody several months ago when he agreed to co-chair (with Dan Lynes) the Future Generations Tournament for The First Tee of Brunswick County. A soft-spoken man, he still managed to command the attention of everyone in the room when we had our first organizational meeting.

  • Brunswick rallies to win Dixie...

Four strikes from losing to Lillington 3-1 in the Dixie Boys Baseball state championship game, Brunswick County rallied for three runs and a 4-3 victory.

Shelton Perkins hit a bases-loaded double against reliever Tyson Messer that scored the three runs with one out in the top of the seventh inning. Brunswick pitcher Gray Cheers then completed a three-hitter by striking out the final batter he faced. Cheers walked one and struck out 10 in the game at Smithville Park.
