  • Halftime: Appreciating weather...

And just like that the first half of summer is behind us. Summer holds different meanings and memories for everyone that calls the Brunswick County coast home. At this stage in my life it means surviving the intensity of the tourist season.

  • Fin Planner team defends...
  • A local coach deserves community...

Brad Watson has coached Dixie Youth baseball in Leland for nine years now.

He’s been fortunate enough to coach multiple all-star teams that have advanced deep into state tournaments and fought for World Series berths.

Perhaps none of those teams were better than Watson’s 12-and-under all-star squad that competed in last week’s Dixie Youth Majors State Tournament in Kenansville.

  • Leland National falls one win...

Leland National stormed through the District 5 Tournament in early July to earn a berth in last week’s Dixie Youth Majors State Tournament in Kenansville.

After outscoring opponents 98-1 and allowing just one base hit during the district tournament, Leland National entered the state event as one of the heavy favorites to represent North Carolina at this year’s Dixie Youth World Series in Lumberton.

  • Brunswick County Pre-Majors...

Mike Alderson has coached Dixie Pre-Majors baseball in Brunswick County for more than 25 years and he can’t remember a local team winning a state championship.

    Until now, that is.

Alderson, an assistant coach to head coach Woody Dunn on this year’s Brunswick County Pre-Majors team, celebrated with his club July 16 as the local boys defeated Gaston County, 8-2, in the championship round to advance to this week’s Dixie Pre-Majors World Series in Chipley, Fla.

  • Dixie Junior Boys team knocks...

WINNABOW – Leland 13-year-old Kenny Frank only walked two batters during the Dixie Boys regular season and he struck out 32 opposing hitters as he sported a perfect 3-0 record on the mound.

Frank continued his sterling pitching with a dominant showing in the 2018 North Carolina Dixie Junior Boys State Tournament last week at Town Creek Park.

Eight-year-old Kieran Meehan of Chattanooga, Tenn., caught a sunfish while fishing with his grandfather in a Bolivia pond. Meehan caught the fish while he was on a trip to Brunswick County with his father. They were visiting Meehan’s grandfather, who lives in Winding River.

  • Browns snare keeper flounder and...

Holden Beach resident Ken Brown and his son Russ of New York show off a pair of keeper flounder and a red drum they caught with Capt. Buster Gillis of Buster’s Outdoors Guide Service. The Browns caught a total of 12 flounder and one red drum using artificial bait in the canals, inlets and Intracoastal Waterway off Holden Beach.
