West Brunswick’s varsity girls’ basketball team completed its most successful season since the 2005-06 campaign when it dropped its first-round state playoff game to Harnett Central last week.

Harnett Central overcame a halftime deficit and stymied West Brunswick’s offense down the stretch to earn a 54-47 win to advance to the second round of the NCHSAA 3A state basketball playoffs.

Trojan senior Natyra Gore led all West Brunswick scorers with 19 points, while junior center Breanna “B.B.” Mercer netted 18.

WILMINGTON – West Brunswick had won just five of its previous 23 games against Hoggard in varsity boys’ basketball prior to this season.

The Trojans have now swept the regular season series against the Vikings for the first time in program history following a 46-39 win Tuesday, Feb. 6, inside Sheila Boles Gym in Wilmington.

West Brunswick (12-11, 5-8) built a 12-point halftime lead, survived a Vikings’ third-quarter rally and made enough free throws late to knock off Hoggard for the second time this season.
